Kondas Centre is situated in the vicarage house of St. John´s Church in one of the most scenic areas of the Old Town of Viljandi (Pikk 8, Viljandi). The building stands next to the medieval St John’s Church and to the moat of the Viljandi Order Castle ruins which look over the lake of Viljandi.
Kondas Centre was founded in 2003 and is dedicated to Paul Kondas (1900-1985) who is the best-known outsider artist in Estonia. The permanent exhibition accommodates Paul Kondas’s oil paintings. The five exhibition premises are used for temporary shows by professional and outsider artists. The Centre is highly active as it hosts around 20 temporary exhibitions during a year.
Kondase Centres residency program will be open all year round. We expect applications from visual artists (illustrators, painters, cross-disciplinary artists) curators and art historians. We can offer 32 square metre second floor room for professional activities as well as, if necessary, for staying overnight. There is special gallery lighting and picture hanging system which enable to exhibit art to the public. Kondas Centre offers to the resident the atmosphere of a lively small museum with temporary exhibitions as well as various cultural events such as performances, concerts and book presentations.
For the guest there is one bed in the studio. Toilet is upstairs and shower is downstairs. Wifi is available. Nearby the Centre is a hostel with sauna.
